How law firms can ethically collect Google reviews, respond without breaching confidentiality, and display them to convert more website enquiries.
Choosing a solicitor is a high-anxiety, high-value decision made by people who usually have no way to judge legal quality directly. In the absence of expertise, they use the only proxy available: what other clients said.
That makes review volume and rating disproportionately powerful for law firms. A firm with 80 reviews at 4.8 will out-convert a technically superior firm with six reviews, because the prospective client cannot assess technical superiority.
Legal practice has a constraint most industries do not: you generally cannot confirm that someone is a client, let alone discuss their matter, in public. This shapes everything about how a firm handles reviews.
It does not prevent you from collecting reviews. It does mean every public response must be written as though the person may not be a client at all — never confirming the engagement, the matter type, or the outcome.
The right moment is at matter conclusion, when the outcome is known and the relief is fresh. Ask earlier and the client cannot yet assess the result; ask much later and they have moved on.
Some matter types warrant caution. Family, criminal, and immigration clients may not want a public association with the firm. Ask, but make it genuinely easy to decline, and never follow up twice in sensitive matters.
A safe positive response acknowledges the sentiment without confirming the relationship: "Thank you for the kind words — we are glad you had a positive experience with the firm."
For negative reviews, resist the urge to correct the record. A defensive reply that reveals matter details is a regulatory problem far more serious than a one-star review. The safe form: "We take all feedback seriously. If you would like to discuss this, please contact our client care team at [contact]."

The highest-value placement is beside the enquiry form or call button, where the visitor is deciding whether to make contact. That is the moment doubt is highest.
Practice area pages are the second priority. A visitor on your employment law page should see reviews there rather than having to find a general testimonials page.

Legal is one of the most competitive local search categories, and review signals are a meaningful component of local pack ranking. Volume, recency, and rating all contribute.
Firms with several offices should treat each location as a separate profile with its own review base. A single strong profile does not lift the others.

Yes, in most jurisdictions, provided the request is not incentivised and does not filter for positive feedback. Check your regulator's advertising rules — the SRA in England and Wales and individual state bars in the US have specific guidance on client testimonials.
Acknowledge the feedback and invite private contact, without confirming the person is a client or referencing any matter detail. Revealing case information to defend the firm is a far more serious problem than the review itself.
You can ask, but never pressure, and never make it a condition of anything. Coercing a review removal can breach professional conduct rules. If the review violates Google's policies, report it instead.
In most urban legal markets, 40 or more reviews at 4.5+ puts a firm in a strong position. Recency matters as much as total volume — a steady trickle beats a large batch from three years ago.
Yes. Each physical office needs its own verified Business Profile with its own reviews. Reviews do not transfer between locations, so each office builds its own local ranking independently.
